Divination is the act of seeking and obtaining knowledge through spiritual practices and rituals. This can look like so many things; Tarot cards, pendulums, omens, Dreams, mirrors, sacrifices, astronomy, numerology ect…

Every person can practice divination. It's all about finding what works for you, and how you would like to communicate with the universe, with spirits, with your gods.

In ancient Mesopotamia, advisors would use divination to predict the future of harvest and of fate of their royalty. During this time priestess were the top in the societal hierarchy.

Priestess were respected in the way that they could connect with divine energy and interpret messages from the god’s that would help society flourish. Personally I use divination as spiritual confirmation and reassurance.

As a practicing spiritualist I think it's very important for one to understand the difference between spirituality and religion. Spirituality is an individual journey so that each person may find their own unique sustainable life.

While religion is an organized way of life that a group or groups of people will follow, and often will identify with specific teachings that come from their religious hierarchy.

It's also definitely worth noting that another main difference between spirituality and religion is that spirituality promotes individuality, there is no wrong way to practice spirituality so long as you do not go against yourself.

And even if you do that you are truly spiritual because you are learning that one can never achieve perfection in this plane of existence.

In our modern day, almost all religions believe in a messiah or maitreya of some sort.

It's to be believed that these “people '' will have divine messages that will liberate the world and push us through this transitional period into enlightenment.

Respect of culture, respect of space, and respect of craft and practice is essential to your spiritual journey.

When you understand the cultural significance of practice you will know what's off limits to you and what is fully okay for you to practice in your own life.

There is no one alive who is going to give you permission to live the life you want to live, your life is truly in your own hands.

Before you start

The most important thing to understand when you want to perform any type of divination is reaching this almost meditative state of mind.

With a still mind you are better able to receive and interpret messages clearly and as unbiasedly as possible. Then you can apply these messages to your life and you will feel at peace with the present.

Since there are hundreds of different ways for you to practice divination. I want to go over the types of divination that require no tools so that you may practice your intuition and can potentially upgrade to more complicated forms of divination.

Before practicing any type of divination you should cleanse your space and cover your head. You can smoke cleanse, light a white candle, or even create an energy ward over yourself, tools, and your workstation so that you can ensure the messages you receive dont pass through any spiritual filters before it reaches you.

Pendulums

If you are scared of working with spiritual energies and really just don't know where to start but have some simple questions in life, I suggest that you buy a Pendulum. Prices can vary depending on what type of jewel or crystals you get but they are typically very affordable.

You can definitely purchase a pendulum that will be a chain of some sort where the bottom is heavier than the top where you will hold it. You can also use any necklace that has a charm or pendant on it.

With no materials you can hold your pendulum over your palm facing upwards. Make sure your hands are stiff and give the pendulum time to stop swinging over your hand.

You can begin with your starting question when the pendulum has settled in the middle of your hand.

Indicat to the pendulum that you would like to perform divination. “ up and down for yes, back and forth for no, would right now be a good time to perform divination for…..( enter what you want to talk about here).

Have a set list of questions that you want your pendulum to answer and make sure you give it time to find stillness between each question.

If you get an initial no from your pendulum it may be that you are not in the right space to hear the answers to your question. Perform a grounding practice and or a cleanse of your crown chakra and try again.

There are a lot of people who will want general reading and the pendulum is not meant for that type of divination.

The pendulum can answer yes and no questions, and you can even purchase a pendulum map that has a bit more options and you will interpret messages based on what direction the pendulum swings on your mat.

Don't forget to say thank you after your reading is completed.

Scrying

Scrying is using some type of reflective surface and interpreting messages from the divine in the images you see from those surfaces.

This can be done in a bowl of water, in the reflection of the river, mirrors you have designated for scrying, a spoon if you wish, anything you have on hand that you have decided to use for its magickal properties.

You will cleanse this as you would normally, that's why it's so important for every spiritual person to have cleansing methods that work for them.

If you are using a surface like a mirror it's important to apply a mirror condenser specific to the type of magick you want to perform.

Typically I smoke cleanse my mirrors and use a special condenser that I use for divination purposes

I find personally that scrying is easier after sunset especially if you intend to receive messages from your ancestors because this is where the day transitions to night ( the time of the dead).

Again allow yourself to reach a meditative state. From this point you will want to direct your gaze on the mirror as you focus your intention, your vision will become more unfocused and you can begin to see messages hidden in the mirror.

These will not feel like thoughts you are thinking but like messages you are receiving from the mirror itself, or the spirits you are working with. Tools are also vessels of sorts that carry spirit and divine knowledge.

Mirrors are known as portals into the spiritual realm and into the infinite universe. When you scry with a mirror you are receiving messages from this realm.
