Herbology 101

Updated: Apr 7, 2022

Herbology is the study and application of using botanicals to heal and influence. It is so important for you to incorporate the world around you into your craft, because few are always more powerful than one.

Herbology is the connection of Earth to spirit, and you must respect the process those botanicals have gone through to get to you.

Growing and picking off an aloe leaf is a lot different from you buying a singular leaf at the store, where you have no idea of its origins. In a perfect world we would all be able to grow the things we need to live, and while it's possible, it's not really feasible for most.

So no matter where you are getting your botanicals it's important to cleanse them and apply your intention to the herbs.

Yes, they each are good for specific things, but like everything else you must awaken them to the process of manipulation. You are basically coaching them and supporting them so that they can help you do what you must.

From seed, to root, to dried leaf, you must know the parts of the herbs you use. While Comfrey root can help you rid of low-ranking evil spirits, comfrey leaf can help you draw abundance and security during business transactions.

Try to connect with the surrounding nature, and find out what herbs grow naturally in your area as these are the herbs most accessible to you.

Quick Tip: if you are new to spirituality and you want to find a spiritual store near you. It's really easy to google Metaphysical stores or Apothecaries near me to find your local magickal tool suppliers!

When you bless your botanicals and the ground, water and sun that they come from you build a bond of trust and respect with the botanical much like you would a crystal, or a candle.

After showing gratitude and making your intentions with the herbs, you have successfully spent some time with your botanicals. Enough so that you can now incorporate them into your craft.

This can look like a number of things Smoke cleansing your space or self, indulging in smoking botanicals, using them in elixirs, spirits, teas, Mojo bags, Protection jars, Bath salt & soaks, they can be directly carried on your person, oil infusions, perfumes, yoni steams, the possibilities are endless.

This can make working with herbs kind of intimidating, but if you look at it as an opportunity to truly love and learn something else, then you can truly become a master.

Below is a key to making the most common recipe for rituals using herbs in a format where you can substitute any ritual blend and intention of your choosing.

In this case, i will be giving you a guide on how to make any oil blend you want. This is the absolute perfect template for beginner spiritualists and witches alike that don't quite have the tools to perform rituals on their own.

IMPORTANT: If you are going to be using any of these conclusions on your skin please make sure you are using skin-safe oils and herbs.

How to make a ritual blend

By definition, a ritual blend is a combination of herbs resins, and oils that work together to serve a singular purpose. All the parts are different but they work together in harmony to channel the energy you are trying to bring in.

It's imperative to understand the ritual building blocks so that you can truly be your own unique architect.

If you are doing a ritual, otherwise known as spells, routine, ceremonies, observances, or manifestation techniques, you need to really understand all the nuts and bolts that make up the entirety of the system.

Ideally, as a master, you can create a ritual from scratch off of a variety of information and materials. It is the need for ritual that makes it so impactful; the innate balance of all things.

A lot of my practice and heritage is rooted in conjure, where one of the biggest truths of all is that we conjure for the purpose of balance.

Not in the greatest good of all, good and bad of course are subjective social constructs. But because conjure, contrary to popular belief, is very much rooted in faith.

Faith is a pilar of spirituality, faith of the spirit in many forms and manifestations.

If you know how to place intentions on your herbs then you know how to make a ritual blend. Each herb has a different intention but they will all work together for the same goal.

For example, if I wanted to create a ritual blend to burn in my home to protect it I wouldn't use 4 different herbs and program them all to protect my home. At that point, I could use basil instead of creating a blend.

However, each herb can have multiple uses like mugwort to protect and purify, Indian temple oil to draw in protective spiritual guardians that watch over me ( an offering amidst the blend), copal resin to amplify, lapis lazuli gem oil as offering the masculine and feminine divine counterparts of parental protection,& Myrrh to protect the sacredness of my space. The point of making a blend is to cover your bases.

How to make any oil infusions

There are so many things that you can do with oils and I believe that having a recipe base for oil infusions is going to support you in your energy manipulation journey.

You can use these oils to anoint yourself, candles, incorporate them into perfumes, mojo bags, and on their own in oil diffusers.

Materials:

  • Ritual blend ( multiple botanicals in dried, powdered, or resin form)

    • Ex. Peace Ritual blend ( Lavender, Majorroam, Caco, Roses)

  • Double Boiler ( a big container that can hold boiling water and a smaller container where you will infuse the oil and herbs that will fit easily into the bigger container. Both must be heatproof. A large pot & mason jar works great!)

  • Carrier oil ( lightweight oil with little to no smell)

    • Ex. Grapeseed, Argan, jojoba

      • If the oil does have a scent and it’s what you have on hand try to use the totality of the oil to your advantage. Jojoba has a light but sweet smell perfect for a come to me oil.

  • Cheesecloth

  • A measuring cup with a lip

  • Container for your finished oil

STEPS

  1. Whatever Herb(s) or ritual blend you want in oil form

  2. Boil water in your larger container/ pot. Enough water to cover the smaller container by 50-75%, you don't need to submerge your smaller container/ jar in water. .

  3. While the water is coming to a boil use 2 parts carrier oil to one part ritual blend and mix it together in your smaller container.

  4. Once your water is boiled bring it down to medium heat so that it can keep a simmer. Place your oil mixture into the pot and continue to stir your intention into the oil blend. Allow mixture to simmer for 10-20 minutes depending on your blend. If resins or powders are used make sure they have completed melted into your mixture.

  5. Set aside your double boiler until the water has cooled and you can take out your oil infusion.

  6. Use your cheesecloth to strain out all the loose herbs from your infusion into your measuring cup.

  7. Next, you will pour your mixture into the container of your choice for the finished oil.

    1. Bonus: you can add a bit of ritual blend into the bottom of your finished oil bottle if you feel inclined to do so to help keep your oil potent but isn't necessary.

  8. Enjoy your oil! This particular peace blend is beautiful for anointing yourself in the morning to help keep your peace throughout the day. Especially after experiencing loss in any form.

HOW TO ANOINT YOURSELF

As a daily practice, I love anointing myself with oils. It's a great way to build a more intimate relationship with yourself.

This practice can be used with any skin-safe oils you created yourself or may have purchased.

As a standard, you should know what type of energy you want to tap into with the oil of your preference. This knowledge is going to assist you in determining what chakras ( energy centers) you want to utilize, to make sure the oil has an entry point to your light body.

EXAMPLES.

  • Using a divination bend over your third eye and crown chakras

  • Using a self-love blend over your heart

  • Applying come to me oil in the same areas you apply perfume

However, there are a few fail-safe techniques you can use that will work with any oil.

The easiest way is to place about a quarter size amount on your hand and rub in the oil. When you are anointing yourself in any fashion envision the significance (metaphysical properties) of the oil as they bleed from your hand chakras into the whole of your light body.

As you work them into your hands may they be worked into your spirit. You can take an extra step to bring your cupped hands up to your face and take in deep breaths of the oil. With each breath breathe the significance of the oil through your breath channels ( chakra flow system) .

I think it's almost impossible to go on a spiritual journey without practicing some type of energy manipulation or magickal healing. Everything you do out of routine or faith is spirituality, it’s the belief in something bigger than yourself or selves.

In the beginning, I was drawn to things that occurred naturally, things that had a life but also a death.

Those are the things most like us, our minds can not truly know the beginning and then end because with every end there is a new beginning.
